বেদ মূলত মুখে মুখে শুনে মনে রাখা হতো, তাই এর অপর নাম 'শ্রুতি'। পরবর্তীকালে মহর্ষি কৃষ্ণদ্বৈপায়ন বেদকে চার ভাগে বিভক্ত করেন এবং তা লিপিবদ্ধ করেন। বেদকে এই চার ভাগে বিন্যস্ত করার কারণেই তাঁর নাম হয় 'বেদব্যাস'।
