The poem is based on the story of Jaritha, a female saranga bird (സാരംഗപക്ഷി) who lived with her four young ones in the Khandava forest [6†L2-L6]. Her mate, Mandapala (മന്ദപാലൻ), had abandoned her for another female bird named Lapitha, leaving Jaritha to fend for herself and their children [6†L7-L8]. The situation turns dire when a massive wildfire, ignited by Arjuna to assist Agni (the god of fire) in consuming the forest, begins to rage through their home. With her chicks still unable to fly to safety, Jaritha's lament and the heart-wrenching dialogue that follows between mother and children form the core of the poem.
