If you are watching on a high-quality, professional-grade monitor with excellent deinterlacing capabilities, and the original source is a true master tape (not a compressed stream), the 1080i format can eke out a bit more fine detail. However, for a standard home theater, the 720p version is the safer, and often better-looking, bet.
It is the most difficult to find and requires a player capable of real-time de-interlacing, but it is the closest we will ever get to a 35mm remaster.
