Despite achieving a rare status as the first Croatian woman to live exclusively from her writing, Parun's path was not without pain and controversy. As a fiercely independent spirit, she often came into conflict with literary institutions and was deeply disappointed at not being made a full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU). This led her to famously refer to Zagreb as a "city of pussies and witches". However, her legacy today is indisputable.
