Remove the top and bottom covers of the transceiver.
: Internal controls like R19 on the RF board and R247 on the Main board can be used to adjust the tuning power output (standard is 10W) to better match external antenna tuners. Maintenance for Aging Units
The IC-M700 typically uses tube (valve) finals (often 6JS6C or similar sweep tubes). Solid-state versions exist but are less common.
Which you have (the original IC-M700 or the later IC-M700PRO )? icom m700 mods
The M-700 is almost always paired with an Icom AT-130 or AT-140. While not a modification to the radio chassis itself, the "mod" here is often in the installation.
For later models like the M710 and M700Pro, Icom changed their approach to frequency restrictions. These radios require software-based unlocking using a DOS-based cloning program and an OPC-552 cloning cable. There are no hardware modifications involved; the radio is "opened up" to cover the ham bands entirely through software configuration.
The M700 contains electrolytic capacitors in the power supply and audio sections that are now 20-30+ years old. Remove the top and bottom covers of the transceiver
Before attempting any modifications, secure these resources:
Marine microphones focus heavily on mid-range frequencies to punch through engine noise. This can sound harsh on SSB ham nets. Open the hand microphone casing.
The original unit only has 48 memory channels. Advanced users often replace the internal SRAM to increase this significantly (up to 480 channels). Solid-state versions exist but are less common
Disconnect the DC power cable and antenna.
A digital DDS VFO board (often Arduino-based) is injected into the local oscillator (LO) circuit of the radio.
The M700 puts out a raw 150W PEP. Running this into a modern 100W-rated antenna tuner can melt toroids. The fix: Adjust the ALC (Automatic Level Control) threshold.

: If the channel lock is intermittent, cleaning flux residue from the discrete PLL circuit boards can resolve many stability issues.
