What makes this hymn so touching is that Sundarar is not a detached monk. He was known to have a playful, often demanding relationship with Shiva. In other verses, he asks Shiva for money, fine clothes, and even complains when Shiva doesn't give him what he wants. But in "Manthiramavathu Neeru," Sundarar’s devotion takes a philosophical turn. He declares that he needs no other mantra, no other god, no other scripture. The ash on Shiva’s body and the ash he wears himself are sufficient.

As a river, whose waves, with ripples, play, And whose waters are sweet as honey, May the stream of mantras, born of Thy mouth, Quench my thirst, and make my soul happy.

The sacred hall (Chidambaram) is within this servant’s heart; the direction I seek is there. The red lotus is to seek you, O Shiva. What is my fault? The death I have attained (to die to the world) is my wealth. On the feet of the flower-like one, surrender, surrender alone. Manthiram aavadhu neeru Vanthu odikkum vimalan thalaththe :

The ocean is water; the shore is the hall of Chidambaram. The stomach is the death that entered inside. The song is those who worship you. The meeting (Kudal/Kootal) is the word that Sundarar speaks. In other verses, he asks Shiva for money,

The tradition of "Manthiramavathu Neeru" was beautifully honored by the legendary musician , who rendered this very hymn to a tune set by T.A. Sambandamurthy Achari. It is also part of collections like "Thevaram" by Sounds of Isha , which features hymns sung by students of Isha Samskriti.

“Kannanaiyaana piraman kalanaiya neeru… The ash worn by the blue-throated Lord (Shiva) The ash that adorns the one who holds the Ganga in his hair — That ash is greater than all holy waters.”
